What is LAS?
Every year, the CMU Leadership Institute has around 2,000 applicants apply for the Leadership Advancement Scholarship. The Leadership Advancement Scholarship, or LAS is awarded to around 40 of the 2,000 applicants. 70 applicants are asked to interview, and compete for the scholarship, and then around 40 are chosen to receive the scholarship. They are looking to award the scholarship to students who have “distinguished themselves through a record of leadership and service”. I was lucky enough to receive one of these scholarships, and I am not exaggerating when I say that it has changed my life. When I visited CMU on competition day for the scholarship in January, I told myself if I got the scholarship, CMU would be the school I attend. I was so excited when I got the phone call a couple weeks later with the good news, I cried.
Being a Leader Advancement Scholar has been the most amazing experience. It has brought to me some of the deepest friendships, the best opportunities, and helped me set up my future for success. I truly can’t imagine my college career without LAS. Being able to live, and learn, with the other 40 people in my cohort makes college life much easier. I am constantly surrounded by a bigger support system than I could have ever imagined, and I know I am in the best environment for me to be successful. I am thankful everyday for this scholarship, and all the wonderful things it has brought to me.
